Baptized Joseph-Hilaire-Armand Boyer. Son of Protector Boyer and Caroline Desrosiers, of Montréal, Québec. He stated being born on 6 June 1892 when he enlisted.

Enlisted in the 57th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he was first transferred to the 41st Battalion. In England, he was transferred to the 69th Reserve Battalion on 13 July 1916, and then to the 22nd Battalion on 28 August. Arriving in France the same day, he was temporarily loaned to the 2nd Canadian Entrenchment Battalion from 18 to 22 September, then to the Wring Party Brigade on 10 December 1916. In the front line, he returned to the 2nd Canadian Entrenchment Battalion from 27 February to 4 April 1917. On 11 January 1918, he returned to the front line with the 22nd Battalion. On 2 April he was killed in action in the Mercatel trenches, north-east of Neuville-Vitasse.

Wailly is a village in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais about 6 kilometres south-west from Arras in the valley of the little river Crinchon. WAILLY ORCHARD CEMETERY stands above the village on its outskirts in part of the old orchard.
