Burial/memorial information
Baptized Étienne-Théodore-Joseph Gagné. Adoptive son of Ovila Perrault and Marie-Louise Gagné, of Montréal, Québec. The age inscribed on his headstone is incorrect, and should rather be 25.
Enlisted in the 22nd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Great Britain on the 20th and landed in Plymouth, England, on the 29th. He was a very undisciplined soldier. On September 15, he left for France and arrived in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, the same day with Company B. On October 15, he was wounded in combat by shrapnel to his left forearm and was evacuated to England on the 20th. This was followed by a long period of hospitalization, also due to illness. On July 13, 1916, he was incorporated into the 69th Reserve Battalion and returned to France on the 28th. On August 1, he returned to the 22nd Battalion. He was seconded to the 2nd Canadian Entrenchment Battalion from August 5 to September 11, 1916. With the 22nd, he was gassed on November 2 and then again on May 4, 1917. Back in combat, he was slightly wounded on July 4. On the night of April 2-4, 1918, the battalion occupied the front line at Mercatel. He was killed in action on April 2, 1918, in the trenches northeast of Neuville-Vitasse, at Mercatel.
