Burial/memorial information
Baptized Joseph-Urgel Gervais. Son of Jean-Baptiste Gervais (deceased in 1916) and Marie Brousseau, of Montréal (St-Henri), Québec. He stated being born in 1880 when he enlisted, and he used the first name “Eugène” but 1901 and 1911 censuses does not indicate that he was known as such. Moreover, he signed “U. Gervais”.
Enlisted in the 22nd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force under the name Ugaine Gervais, he sailed for Great Britain on May 20, 1915, and landed in Plymouth, England, on the 29th. On September 15, he crossed the English Channel from Folkestone and arrived in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France, that same day. He was killed in action on April 6, 1917, in Neuville Saint-Vaast during the Battle of Mont Saint-Éloi, Pas-de-Calais, in the Souchez and Scarpe sector.
