Baptized Joseph-Henri-Omer Fortier. Son of Marie-Louise Paré (deceased in 1893) and Omer Fortier (remarried in 1897 to Belzémire Grenier), of Limoilou, Québec. Henri became motherless two weeks after his birth and was then taken care of and raised by his grand-parents, Honoré Fortier (deceased in 1904) and Adélaïde Carrier.
He served in the 6th Regiment before enlisting in the 41st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He joined the 23rd Battalion on June 27, 1915, and sailed for Great Britain on October 16 with the 41st Battalion, landing in Plymouth, England, on the 28th. Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on September 10, he crossed into France on the 15th and landed at Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, on the same day.
Hit to the head by shrapnel in the trenches of Saint-Éloi, Ypres, he was evacuated to No. 6 Canadian Field Ambulance, located in Reninghelst, where he died of his wounds.
