Pte. Gordon Sedgwick's letter was printed in the Toronto Star in November 1916. The Star had issued an appeal to relatives to submit letters received from soldiers at the front, and those deemed most interesting would be published. Sedgwick refers to the Battle of Courcelette, part of the Somme campaign.

Anneux is a village in the Department of the Nord, a little to the south of the main road from Cambrai to Bapaume.
The ANNEUX BRITISH CEMETERY stands in a broad valley running east and west between Bourton Wood and the village of Graincourt, 200 metres from the junction of the N30 and D15
