Alfred James Barrett was born on May 14, 1884 in Hammersmith, England. He immigrated to Canada in 1905, was married to Daisy Critcher in 1906 and lived in Preston, Ontario and later in Toronto at 367 Jones Avenue (just south of the Danforth). He ran an electrical appliance store at 353 Danforth Avenue till he joined up in August of 1915 and went overseas in 1916 on the SS Olympic (sister ship of the Titanic). He was in the 83 rd Battalion, and later the 5th CMR as an artillery gunner. He was killed in action and was promoted to Lt. Col. after his death. He left two children (aged 9 and 7). His parents survived him and they lost three sons in WW1 - Alfred who fought in the Canadian Army, and two other sons, William and Thomas, who fought, and died with the British infantry. <br> Photo c.
