Jean-Baptiste stated being born on 22 August and being 35 years-old. His biological father, his adoptive father, his mother as well as himself were illiterate; it is therefore not possible to determine the correct spelling of the last name.
Enrolled in the 1st Battalion Depot of the 2nd Quebec Regiment under the Compulsory Military Service Act of 1917, he left for England on February 18, 1918, arriving the following March 3 while assigned to the 10th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on August 8, he landed in France on the 10th and went to the front line on the 15th, being killed in action on August 27, 1918 during an assault from Neuville-Vitasse to Wancourt at the Battle of Chérisy.

Baptism record for Jean Baptiste Desgagne. It can be spelt Desgagnes, Desgagne, or DeGagne. The "s" are silent. At this time, most of his family was using Desgagne. Later on, in Manitoba, most have gone to using DeGagne. The screenshot of the baptism is from BaNQ.
