Baptized Joseph Alexandre Francoeur. Son of Joseph Alfred Francoeur and Angèle (aka Angélique) Huard of St-Godefroi, Gaspésie, Québec.

Enlisted in the 77th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Bermuda on September 21, 1915. In November, he was incorporated into the 38th Battalion. Returning to Canada on December 3, he left for Great Britain. On January 22, 1916, he was back in St. John, New Brunswick. On April 17, he left for Great Britain with the 69th Reserve Battalion. He landed in Liverpool, England, on the 27th. Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on June 28, he crossed the English Channel on the 29th and landed in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France. On July 13, he joined his new unit on the front lines in Zillebeke, Belgium. He was killed in action on August 24, 1916, in the Voormezeele-St-Éloi sector, near Ypres, Belgium.

ELZENWALLE BRASSERIE CEMETERY is located 5 Km south west of Ieper town centre, on the Kemmelseweg, a road connecting Ieper to Kemmel (N331).

From Ieper town centre the Kemmelseweg is reached via the Rijselsestraat, through the Lille Gate (Rijselpoort), and straight on towards Armentieres (N365). 900 m after the crossroads is the right hand turning onto the Kemmelseweg. (Made prominent by a railway level crossing).

The ELZENWALLE BRASSERIE CEMETERY lies 4 Km along the Kemmelseweg on the right hand side of the road.
