Sgt. (N) Murphy was on board Anson R9780 operating out of #2 Observers Advanced Flying Unit, RAF Millom near Haverigg, Cumberland. While on a training flight, it developed engine failure and crashed outside Whitehaven, Cumberland.
One other Canadian airman, F/S (P) Vincent Dunnigan was killed, and three members of the RAF.
Eyewitnesses said it "broke up in the air" and the main fuselage, engines and other wreckage came down on the hillside called 'The Brows' at Kells.
