Baptized Joseph-Napoléon Bernard. Son of Godefroy Bernard and Pauline Plante (deceased in 1914), of Lewiston and Augusta, Maine. He stated being born on 9 October 1881 when he enlisted.

He arrived in France on 15 September 1915 and took part in the First Battle of Ypres in Belgium, the Battles of Vierstraat, St-Éloi and Zillebeke, also in Belgium, and the Battle of the Somme in France. He was killed in action at Brickfields during the Battle of Courcelette for the capture of Regina Trench.
