Burial/memorial information
At time of enlistment, Joseph had lost his wife Herméline Riel, who died the year before. The family had also lost two babies in less than three years. These losses might have influenced his desire to go off to war, although he was over the age limit of 45 years old. When he enlisted, he stated being born on 15 November 1879, ten years younger that he really was. He gave custody of his three children to his adoptive mother Lucie Cayer and his step-sister Clara.
Enlisted in the 41st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, he arrived in Plymouth, England, on 28 October 1915. Integrated into the 23rd Reserve Battalion on 29 February 1916, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion on 15 April and sent to France the same day. He joined his new unit in the front line on 6 May. He was reported missing in action on 4 October 1916 during the Battle of Courcelette. On 11 May 1917, he was officially recognised as presumed killed in action.
