Baptized Joseph-Fabien Bessette. Son of Philippe Bessette and Angelina Denicourt (who died in 1893).

His father remarried to Hermine Leclair and moved to Central Falls, Rhode Island.

On 22 May 1916, after a period of illness, he joined his unit in action in the trenches of the St-Éloi sector in Belgium. He was initially reported missing, but was later declared killed in action on 11 June during the fighting at Zillebeke-Mont-Sorrel, in the Ypres salient in Belgium.
