Baptized Joseph Édouard Hébert. Son of Joseph Hébert and Philomène Farineault of Ste-Martine, Montréal and Ste-Clotilde, Châteauguay, Québec.

He stated being born in Ste-Martine in 1897 when he enlisted.

Enlisted in Company D of the 41st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Great Britain on October 18, 1915, and landed in Plymouth, England, on the 28th. On March 15, 1916, he was assigned to the 23rd Reserve Battalion at Shorncliffe. On April 23, he crossed the English Channel and landed in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France, that same day. Also on the 23rd, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion. He went to the front lines on May 14. He was first wounded in action on September 30, 1916, then reported missing on October 3, 1916, and presumed killed in action during the Battle of Courcelette, Somme, in the capture of the Regina Trench. His body was never found.
