Son of Philomène Chartrand (deceased in 1881) and Roch Labelle (remarried in 1882 and 1884 and became widowed again in 1899). Husband of Lucille Delorme, of Montréal, Québec. His birth certificate has not been traced and the 1901 census indicates February 28th, 1876 as his date of birth.

Enlisted in the 69th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Great Britain on April 17, 1916. The ship set sail and arrived in Liverpool, England, on the 27th. On August 27 of that year, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion, based at Camp Dibgate in Shorncliffe. On the 28th, he crossed the English Channel from Folkestone and landed in France that same day. He was seconded to the 2nd Canadian Entrenchment Battalion from September 18 to 20. On October 4, 1916, he was reported missing in action during the Battle of Courcelette, Somme. On May 11, 1917, he was officially recognized as having been killed in action. His body was never found.
