Son of Charles Walter and Alice Maude Down of Toronto, Ontario. Husband of Bertha Down of Toronto.

Brother of Private William George Down, who died on October 5, 1916, while serving with the Canadian Army Service Corps and of Quartermaster Charles Otter Down, who died on June 17, 1915, while serving with the American Medical Corps.

His brother Private Richard E. Down served with the No. 2 General Hospital in England and survived the war.
