On 2 December 1943, in Bari, Italy, 105 German Ju-88 bombers attacked the quays where ships were being unloaded. Seventeen cargo ships loaded with 35,000 tonnes of goods were destroyed, and 800 sailors and civilians were killed by fires, explosions and mustard gas poisoning. The attack claimed the lives of 4 of the Lom's 32 crew members. Farries died of his injuries on the 3rd.
