Son of Napoléon Chagnon and Alida Brais from St-Hyacinthe, Québec.

Baptised Joseph Rosario Jean Maurice Chagnon. He previously served with the 43rd Canadian Army (R) Training Centre in Farnham, Quebec, regimental number E-51783, from 9 April 1942 to 13 November 1942. Enlisted in the regular forces on 23 November 1942, regimental number D-41195, with the Saint-Hyacinthe Regiment in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, he embarked for Great Britain on 16 February 1944, arriving on the 25th. He embarked for Italy on 26 March 1944, and was transferred to the 1st Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment on 9 April 1944. He was wounded in action for the first time on 1 September 1944 in Borgo Santa Maria, Italy. On 15 December 1944, he was again seriously wounded in action between Traversara and Bagnacavallo along the Fosso Vecchio dikes of the Naviglio canal. He died of his wounds on 25 December 1944 in the military hospital at Miramare di Romagna. He was initially buried in the local cemetery before being exhumed and reburied in the cemetery on the Coriano ridge, in Italy.

CORIANO RIDGE WAR CEMETERY Italy

CORIANO RIDGE WAR CEMETERY is 3.5 kilometres west of Riccione, a seaside resort on the Adriatic coast, and is reached by turning west off the main Rimini/Riccione road about 1 kilometre north-west of Riccione. In the town of Riccione is a sign leading to the Coriano Ridge War Cemetery. Carry on in the direction of Coriano until a 'T' junction is reached. Turn left and after a short distance the Cemetery will be found on the right-hand side.

The cemetery is permanently open and may be visited outside the working hours of the local gardening staff, but will be unmanned.
