Son of John Cooper and Margaret Stephen Murray, of Portsoy, Banffshire, Scotland. Husband of Ethel William, of Westmount, Montréal, Québec.

On 12 November 1942, during Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa, the Karanja was attacked, bombed and sunk at 8.30 am by a German aircraft off Bougie, Algeria. Of its crew, 44 sailors lost their lives. The survivors were rescued by the SS Strathnaver.
