Son of James Francis Berrigan and Evelyn Lyons of Québec, Québec. Brother of Frank Berrigan, of Quebec City.
On April 30, 1942, at 7:37 a.m., the Taborfjell was torpedoed by U-576 about 95 miles (153 km) east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA. Due to its cargo, it sank in one minute, position 41°52'N/67°43'W. The three survivors were rescued twenty hours later by HMS P-552, Royal Navy, which landed them in St. John's, New Brunswick, on 7 May.
