Born with the surname Duncan, he was adopted by his grandfather and took the name Russell Clayton Duncan Crowell.

Son of Captain James Jackson Clarke Duncan and Helen Ida Penney, of Wolfville, Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Husband of Norah Crowell.

On 9 March 1943, convoy SC-121 set sail from New York, USA, towards Clyde, Scotland. At 10:41 pm, the ships were attacked by U-409, which launched two torpedoes. The tanker Rosewood was hit and broke in two, but both sections remained afloat. The US Coast Guard vessel USCGC Bibb (WPG-31) sank them on the 11th, in position 58°30'N/20°31'W. Her captain, 31 crew and nine gunners had already perished.
