Son of Roy Ferguson and Edith Kate (nee Fowkes) Gavel, of Vancouver, British Columbia; husband of Jean Loraine Gavel, of Vancouver, British Columbia. Stepbrother of Clarence. He enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy on 30 September 1945. He saw service in Canada and the High Seas. The province of British Columbia honoured Lieutenant Gavel by naming Gavel Lake in his honour.
