Burial/memorial information
On 16 November 1940, the Towa left Sydney harbour, Nova Scotia, with convoy HX-92 for London, England. On 11 December 1940, at 8:52 pm, she was torpedoed by U-96 about 100 miles (161 km) south of Rockall, between Iceland and Ireland, position 58°50'N/10°10'W. At 9:30 pm, she received a coup de grâce, which only damaged her. At 10:02 pm, the submarine on the surface fired 16 shells from its deck gun and sank her at 10:42 pm. The 15 survivors were rescued by HMS Matabele (G26), which landed them at Scapa Flow, Scotland. In all, 18 sailors did not return home.
