Burial/memorial information
On 21 December 1942, Montreal City was sailing with convoy ONS-152 and trailing astern when she was torpedoed by U-591 at 3:56 am 600 miles (966 km) east-north-east of St. John's, Newfoundland. At 4.09 am, she received the coup de grâce and sank in less than two minutes, in position 50°23'N/38°00'W. The bad weather took its toll on the survivors, who had taken refuge in three lifeboats. Her captain, 32 crew members and 7 gunners lost their life.
