On 8 June 1942, the Suwied was sailing alone and unarmed when she was torpedoed at 1.19 am, travelling in a straight line 140 miles (225 km) south-east of the island of Cozumel, off the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico. She sank in less than three minutes with two officers and four sailors, in position 20°00'N/84°48'W. After 19 hours adrift, the captain, 5 officers, 20 sailors and one passenger were rescued by the US Coast Guard vessel USCGC Nemesis (WPC-111) after being detected by a US Navy surveillance aircraft, position 20°05'N/84°48'W.
