Son of William Robert Henderson and Margaret Mary Meehan of Spencer’s Island, Nova Scotia.

On 8 May 1942, at 6:12 pm, the Ohioan was sailing in a straight line when she was torpedoed by U-564 about 10 miles (16 km) off Boynton Beach, Florida. The ship sank by the stern in less than three minutes after rolling over, in position 26°31'N/79°59'W. The 8 officers and 29 crew members managed to launch two lifeboats, which collided and broke apart. The whirlpool caused by the ship took 15 sailors with it. The 22 survivors were rescued by a US Coast Guard vessel and landed in West Palm Beach, Florida, where 4 were hospitalized.
