On 14 November 1942, at 4:58 pm, the Scapa Flow was torpedoed by U-134 to the south-west of the island of Praia, Cape Verde. She sank in less than a minute in position 12°N/30°W. Of a crew of 60 men, 47 sailors and 13 armed guards, 33 lost their lives. The survivors were rescued on 1 December by the British corvette HMS Armeria (K187) and landed in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on 7 December. The captain, 25 crew members, 6 gunners and a sailor on a raft paid with their lives.
