Son of Nelson Wilbur Hoben and Annie Sophia Kerr of Pugash, Nova Scotia. Brother of Private William Donald Hoben, regimental number 715035, 25th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, killed in action on11 April 1917 at Courcelette, France, and Private Levi D. Hoben, regimental number 488881, 18th Battalion, who also fought in France. He survived the war.
On 29 May 1942, at 02:17 am, the Western Head was sailing unescorted when she was torpedoed by U-107 50 miles (70 km) east of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and sank in Windward Passage, position 19°57'N/74°18'W.
