Son of Frederick William Kavanagh and Mary Ella Murphy of St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Departing Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 23 March 1942, on 31 March, at 10:22 pm, she was torpedoed by U-71 and sank by the stern south-east of New York, United States, position 37°33'N/68°22'W. The captain, 47 crew members, two gunners and a passenger lost their lives. Three sailors and three gunners were rescued by the British tanker Regent Panther and landed in Halifax.
