Baptized Joseph Henri Aimé Gladu. Son of Andréa Gladu and Marie Rose Renaud of Marieville, Rouville, Quebec. Husband of Marie Paule Gaboury of Quebec City, who married Gérard Laliberté of Quebec City in her second marriage. She had no children.

On December 15, 1936, he enlisted in the Canadian Permanent Active Militia with the Maisonneuve Regiment, service number 1420. He was discharged from the army on April 4, 1937. He re-enlisted on January 30, 1940, with the Royal 22nd Regiment, service number E-4928. He sailed for Great Britain on May 11 and landed in Liverpool, England, on the 21st. On September 12, he was arrested for burglary and sentenced to fifteen months in prison. Released on September 13, 1941, he returned to his regiment on November 29. He was relatively undisciplined. On June 15, 1943, he set sail again with Force M and left for the Mediterranean to take part in Operation Husky, the Allied landing on July 10, 1943, at Pachino, Sicily. On September 10, he set foot on Italian soil at Reggio Calabria. On December 8, he fell ill with pulmonary tuberculosis. He was brought back to England on April 8, 1944, and repatriated to Canada in May. He died of the disease on August 22, 1946. He had served 1,653 days, including 1,463 days overseas.
