Brother of Sergeant Douglas Allan Black, who died while serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Marvin served in Ontario, New Brunswick, and in Hong Kong with Force C, where he was attached to the 1st Battalion, Royal Rifles of Canada. He had 523 days of service, including 53 overseas.
