His full name is Lawrence William Smith. Son of Robert Smith and Caroline Sullivan, of Richmond, Québec. Robert served during the First World War, from 28 December 1914 to 28 December 1916, service number 748284.

His brother, Edward Albert Smith, service number E-30278, Royal Rifles of Canada, was prisoner of war in Hong Kong.

Lawrence served in Québec, in New Brunswick, in Newfoundland with Force W, in Hong Kong with Force C. He had 780 days of service, including 349 overseas.
