Son of Patrick Joseph Power and Catherine Butler from St. John’s, Newfoundland.

On 27 July 1942, Kellwyn sailed from the Tyne, England, to Oban, Scotland, then in convoy with OG-69 to Lisbon, Portugal. Between 00:21 and 00:24 am, U-79 launched five torpedoes approximately 350 miles (563 km) west-north-west of Cape Finisterre, Spain. The Kellwyn was hit and sunk, in position 43°00'N/17°00'W. The captain, 10 crew members and 3 gunners lost their lives. Nine crew members were rescued by the British armed trawler HMS St.Nectan and landed in Gibraltar on 1 August.
