On 3 February 1941, the Black Osprey left the port of Halifax, Nova Scotia. On the 10th, she moved away from convoy HX-107 due to very bad weather. At 2:27 am on the 18th, she was hit by a torpedo launched from U-96 about 130 miles (209 km) south of Iceland. At 3.25 am, a second torpedo hit her and she sank twelve minutes later in position 61°13'N/18°10'W. A dinghy was found 53 hours later by the Norwegian merchant ship Mosdale, at 6 am on the 20th. The 11 survivors were disembarked in Barry, Wales. The captain, 24 crew members and a gunner lost their lives.
