Son of Alexander Campbell Buchanan and Elizabeth Margaret McDonald, of Prince Edouard Island.
Brother of Private Everett Byron Buchanan, regimental number 256517, 1st Canadian Mountain Rifles, and Private John Hector Buchanan, regimental number 712902, 26th Battalion, both Canadian Expeditionary Force. They fought in France and survived the fighting in the First World War.
On August 10, 1941, the SS Eaglescliffe Hall was at anchor off Sunderland, Durham England, when she was targeted by German bombers. One of the three bombs hit the engine room, killing two people and injuring several others, including Buchanan who died of his wounds on the 12th.
