On 18 December 1940, the Napier Star sailed from Liverpool, England, to Panama, then New Zealand, with 17 passengers. At 8:20 pm, she was sailing unescorted when she was hit by one of the two torpedoes launched from U-100 321 miles (517 km) off Rockall, in the North Atlantic. She sank by the stern after receiving the coup de grâce at 8:49 pm, position 58°58'N/23°13'W. The captain, 58 crew members and 12 passengers lost their lives. Nine sailors, one gunner and four passengers were rescued by the SS Vaalaren, which landed them in Liverpool on 23 December.
