Son of Juan Barlow Wood Echevarri and Frances Eliza Loup. Husband of Sarah Emily Turpin, of Ilford, Essez, England, Father of Gertrude Blanche, Alice Maud, Alfred Maskell and Harold Francis W. Echevarri.

Requisitioned by the British Admiralty, SS Royal Edward became HMT Royal Edward and was converted into a troop transport. While on route to Gallipoli, Turkey, with about 1,335 British troops, she was torpedoed by UB-14 6 miles (9.5 km) west of the Aegean island of Kandeloussa and sank with 866 men, position 36°31'N/25°51'E.
