On 20 October 1916, the Cabotia was en route from Montreal, Quebec, to Manchester, England. At around 12:20 pm, the U-69 on the surface fired its cannon. At around 2pm, the submarine continued to fire its cannon at the stern of the cargo ship. The Cabotia sank approximately 120 miles (193 km) west-north-west of Tory Island, Ireland, position 55°16'N/11°16'W. Of the crew, 32 sailors lost their lives.
