On 1 February 1916, the Franz Fischer, on a voyage from Hartlepool, England, to Cowes, England, was sunk by the UB-17 two miles (3 km) south of Kentish Knock lighthouse in the North Sea. Of the crew of 16 sailors, 13 lost their lives, including the captain.
