Son of Levi Lewis Jones and Maria Hill of Bedminster, Bristol, England. Husband of Mabel Lillian Bowering of Eastville, Bristol. His wife married Harold Charles Thomas in the second marriage and their son, Sergeant Ivor Bertram Thomas, wireless operator with 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, serial number 1184086, was killed in action in Belgium on 22 May 1944.
Requisitioned by the British Admiralty, SS Royal Edward became HMT Royal Edward and was converted into a troop transport. While en route to Gallipoli, Turkey, with about 1,335 British troops, she was torpedoed by UB-14 6 miles (9.5 km) west of the Aegean Island of Kandeloussa and sank with 866 men, position 36°31'N/25°51'E.
