On 14 March 1917, the Paignton was en route from Greece to Glasgow, Scotland, when she was torpedoed and sunk by U-81 40 miles (64 km) north-west of the Skellig Islands, Ireland, position 52°01'N/11°29'W. Two sailors lost their lives.
