On 5 August 1918, the Freshfield was en route from Messina, Italy, to Taranto, Italy, when it was torpedoed and sunk by the UC-25 of Lieutenant Karl Dönitz, future Grand Admiral of the Nazi fleet and designated successor to Adolf Hitler. The ship sank 4 miles (6.5 km) north-east of Cape Colonne, south-east of Crotone, Italy, in Ionian Sea. Three sailors lost their lives.
