Son of William Daly and Emily McGrath, of Mall Bay, St. Mary’s Bay, Newfoundland.

On 30 July 1917, the Shimosa was sailing alone in ballast from Le Havre, Normandy, France, towards Canada when she was torpedoed by U-46 220 miles (354 km) north-west of Eagle Island, Mayo, England, in the North Sea, position 55°14'N/15°05'W. Her captain and 16 crew members lost their lives.
