Reported missing by the authorities on April 11, 1917, while on route from Dakar, Senegal, to Liverpool, England, the Vine Branch was torpedoed on April 6, 1917, by U-55 south-west of Ireland, position 49°45'N/14°08'W. All 44 crew members lost their lives.
