Born in Newfoundland. Husband of Amelia Snow, of Hare Bay, Change Islands, Newfoundland. Father of Cecile Leslie Blake.

On April 15, 1917, the Arcadian, transformed into a troop transport, had just finished an exercise with 1,335 soldiers when it was torpedoed by UC-74 26 miles (42 km) north-east of the island of Milos, in the Cyclades archipelago, Greece. It sank in six minutes, position 36°50'N/24°50'W. In the whirlpool caused by the ship, 277 men lost their lives, including 34 crew members. The 1 0 58 survivors were rescued by the escort ships.
