On 13 April 1917, the Argyll was en route from Port Kelah, Algeria, to Middlesbrough, England, when she was torpedoed 110 miles (177 km) west of Bishop Rock in the North Atlantic, and sank in position 49°23'N/09°07'W. The attack cost the lives of 22 sailors. The captain survived.
