Burial/memorial information
Son of Henri Chartier and Marie Ange Lessard from Sherbrooke, Québec.
Baptized Joseph Eugène Henri Marcel Chartier.
With the 2nd Battalion, D Company, he was killed in action during an assault on hill 172 against Chinese positions. ‘On 12 September [1951] B company, commanded by Captain P.R. (Pat) Tremblay, was to distinguish itself... At about 3.30 p.m., a few minutes after an intense aerial bombardment followed by heavy artillery fire, B company launched an assault on the Chinese positions. The attack lasted a full two hours, during which several ‘22s’ distinguished themselves... Lieutenant J.E. Meloche's platoon, unable to assist as planned, succeeded in penetrating the very centre of the enemy positions and routing them... Unfortunately, the attack resulted in casualties. In addition to Corporal M.E.H. Chartier, who lost his life, one officer and four soldiers were wounded... The next day, D Company, which occupied the positions temporarily taken the day before and recovered Corporal Chartier's body, counted no fewer than 36 enemy corpses. Les Bataillons et le Dépôt du Royal 22e Régiment, page 63.
