Baptized Joseph Robert Marcel Ovide Gendron. Son of Arthur Gendron and Nativité Ripeau, from Donacona, Portneuf, Québec. Brother of Jacques, Guy, Pierre, Claude, Claire and Edith.
Enlisted at the 5th District Military Depot in Quebec City with the Canadian Army Special Force, he was transferred to the 1st Battalion of the Royal 22nd Regiment in 1949. He left for Japan on March 28, 1952, and then landed in Pusan, South Korea. He was reported missing and presumed killed in action on May 6, 1952, during a patrol east of Sami-Chon. His body was never recovered.
His name was inscribed on the cenotaph of the Korean War Memorial in Meadowvale Cemetery, Brampton, Peel, Ontario, erected in 1997 to commemorate the 516 Canadians killed in action between 25 June 1950 and 27 July 1953, as well as on the Korean War Memorial in downtown Ottawa, Ontario. An identical monument can be found at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Pusan (South Korea).
