Excerpt from the book 'Le Livre D'or (The Golden Book) of the Canadian Contingent in South Africa by Gaston P. Labat.

'GAT' HOWARD IS KILLED, London, February 24th.
'The War Office has received the following despatch from Lord Kitchener: - 'I regret to say that Major Howard, a very gallant officer of the Canadian Scouts, was killed February 17th'.

Arthur 'Gat' Howard received his nickname due to his association with the Gatling Gun.

WAKKERSTROOM GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE South Africa

The closest city is Volkrust. Arrive at Wakkerstroom on the R543, turn north onto Sheiding Street and go to the end (pub on corner). The cemetery is on the left. The Canadian graves are located in centre rear.
