Son of James Alfred Caradine and Mary Rebecca Drewry, of Ashley Hill, Bristol, England.

He was a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy, serial number D/JX-188185, and was under the command of HMS President III. He was on loan to the merchant navy.

On 20 September 1942, the Lifland left Pictou, Nova Scotia, with convoy SC-101 and headed for Milford Haven, England. On the 29th, she drifted away from her formation and lost sight of the convoy due to heavy fog. At 20:58 she was torpedoed by U-610 south-east of Cape Farewell, Iceland, position 56°40'N/30°30'W, and sank after receiving a coup de grace at 21:17. The captain and his 23 crew members lost their lives.
