Additional information

On 10 December 1939, the Stanwood's coal cargo caught fire and the ship had to be beached and scuttled. During the manoeuvre at Carrick Roads, near Fairmouth, Cornwall, England, in the English Channel, one sailor lost his life. The ship's refloating failed, but the cargo was recovered.
